Sonnenberg board pupil Nikolas Resche is frog poison dart-murdered while jogging. Rico joins the field team, fascinated by Nikolas's brilliant loner classmate Ira Belling whom he once mobbed, an unpopular Goth, prime suspect given access and ample knowledge of the exotic MO, she even keeps fit Amazonian frogs. Also suspect are teacher Karsten Reinhardt, who also read Ira's paper on frog poison, and Nicolas's former roommate, womanizing jock Sebastian Brinkhof, who states he disliked apparent homoerotic interest. Shortly after Ira is also prime suspect for the murder of Karsten Reinhardt, stabbed in his room, but the cases aren't necessarily linked. Rico also finds evidence that principal Tanja Schulz had an illegal affair with a pupil, but not Nikolas as first appears. By the time Jo puts it all together, another poison dart is kept ready.

Catania, 1960s. At the beach resort run by the charming Rozzo Finocchiaro, Stefano, a blind elderly man, observes and comments with ironic and acerbic commentary on the behavior of the people who frequent the beach and whose lives are intertwined. Passing under his scrutiny are the industrialist Alfredo Condorelli—married to the wealthy Maria Rita and engaged in a clandestine affair with his secretary Rosalba—the stifling Rosa—wife of the former playboy Alfredo—the four bigwigs Roberto, Michele, Armando, and Rocco; the musician Gregorio Alacci; the fallen boss Jano Suarez; the Lanzafame family; and Peppino Di Paternò—a fifty-year-old married to the statuesque Ulla.

Matteo, a forty-year-old cartoonist, divides his time between work and family and nurtures the dream of publishing his own comic book starring Solo Valentine, a selfish superhero who uses his powers only for himself. He is married to Paola, a successful writer. A pleasant family picture, with three daughters, Virginia (9), Ginevra (6), Melania (2), and two dogs, is thrown into crisis when Sara, an old acquaintance of Matteo's, reappears with an offer he cannot refuse: to publish his comic book on condition that he moves to Paris.
